Welcome to the first edition of Perform
Magazine.
There is nothing like a live performance. That two-way interaction
between performer and audience is a tangible thing. It can be
electric. It is also a risky form of entertainment: a performer
may have a bad night; or equally something unexpectedly magical
may take place. We are blessed in Sussex with a rich array of
live performances, limited only by our imagination. During the
festivals, we are reminded just how many artists work in the
area, and how unlimited the possibilities of live performance
are. It seemed about time Sussex had a performance-specific
publication, so here it is!
The mission of Perform Magazine
is twofold. For the audience: to provide all lovers of live
performance with an entertaining and informative read as well
as listings of performance in Sussex and beyond. For the artist:
to provide the performers of Sussex with a useful resource.
This will include insights into performers’ careers, opportunities,
artists’ online forum, free listings and guides to sectors of
the industry. The first edition is a rag-tag affair (having
been put together in a few desperate minutes per day) including
some, but not all of these pieces of the jigsaw. There are many
forms of performance that have not been represented in this
edition, leaving an obviously gaping hole, such as music and
dance. The rest is a work in progress that will appear in the
second edition. (The second edition will also contain a Readers’
Comments page, so please feel free!)
In this edition we have discussions on the nature of a stage
and on the decay of good live performance poetry today. We have
snapshots of the lives of one of the few female Circus Ringmasters
and a Director of Fooling. Also, a live poetry review and an
account of a piece of artwork put together in a live performance,
among other tasty treats.
I hope you enjoy this first edition.
